Ayurvedic Remedies for Asthma

Bronchial asthma is a chronic disease that affects your airways and is also one of the most common diseases found worldwide. In the majority of cases, the disease is mild and is often not recognized. However, with increasing industrialization and consequently the invasion of allergens into our daily life can increase the prevalence of asthma. The main symptoms of asthma are recurrent breathing problems, wheezing, breathlessness, coughing, chest tightness etc.
The main cause of asthma is unknown till date. However some factors that are known to increase the likelihood of developing asthma might be developing another atopic condition like food allergy or having a family history of any allergy related conditions or asthma. Either way, bronchial asthma is on the rise throughout the world. Irrespective of this, medical science has not yet found a permanent cure for asthma. However, Ayurveda has found some remedies that can help you in avoiding frequent attacks.

Instead of searching for a temporary relief, Ayurveda concentrates on the causative factors and the predisposing conditions. For instance, apart from the respiratory afflictions, this medical science gives emphasis to the gastro-intestinal factors to be the cause for bronchial asthma. It has been observed that in most of the cases, the patient suffers from diarrhea, constipation or indigestion in the preliminary stage of the disease or just before the onset of the disease.

According to the science of Ayurveda, asthma is a kapha syndrome and can be from any of these three forms - vaata, pitta or kapha. In most cases, it is kapha in nature. The cause and the symptoms of each of these forms are different and therefore the treatment also differs. Dry cough and wheezing are the main symptoms of vaata type asthma. Apart from this, there are other symptoms like dry mouth, thirst, constipation, dry skin, craving for warm drinks and even anxiety.
Pitta type asthma is differentiated by wheezing and coughs with yellow phlegm. Other symptoms include, sweating, fever, need for cool air and irritability. The last type of asthma is the kapha type which is characterized by wheezing and coughs with white phlegm.

Recognizing the type of asthma and its causes helps in using the remedies that are appropriate for the patient. Moreover, with Ayurveda, you can effectively treat your asthma if it is of recent origin. Ayurveda treatment not only gives the drug that provides relief from the asthma attacks, but also regulates your diet and your way of living.
